Petition to the President of the Portuguese Parliament
Subject:Holding of NATO’s Summit in Portugal
The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) has announced the holding of a Summit in Portugal, in which it envisages to review its strategic concept, in order to broaden the scope of its geographic action, as is already happening in the Balkans, in Afghanistan, in Pakistan, as well as the pretext for intervention.
The holding of this Summit in Portugal confirms our country’s involvement in the militaristic purposes of this political-military block, which represent a threat for international peace and security.
The engagement of the Portuguese government in NATO collides with the fundamental principles enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic and in the Charter of the United Nations, subscribed by Portugal: sovereignty; independence; non-interference; non-aggression; peaceful resolution of conflicts; abolition of colonialism and all other forms of aggression, domination and exploitation; disarmament; dissolution of political-military blocks.
Concerned with the objectives and significance of this Summit, the undersigned declare their opposition to the holding of NATO’s Summit in Portugal and to its warmongering aims, and demand from the Portuguese authorities:
- The withdrawal of Portuguese forces involved in NATO’s military missions
- The end of foreign military bases and of NATO premises in national territory
- To refuse the militarisation of the European Union, which makes it NATO’s European pillar
- The effective implementation of a Portuguese foreign policy in consonance with the principles laid down in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic and the UN Charter, including the promotion of initiatives enhancing disarmament and the dissolution of political-military blocks
We, the undersigned, call on you to sign this petition.
